A king had two sons. He needed to decide which son would be his heir and become the next king. He decided on a horse race challenge. He said "Whoever's horse crosses the finish line last gets my kingdom."

For the race they both started out very slow until they eventually came across a man at the side of the road. He asked them why they were riding so slow. They told him their story and the man gave them two words of advice. After hearing these words they took off as fast as they could.

Letís say that you have 25 horses, and you want to pick the fastest 3 horses out of those 25. In each race, only 5 horses can run at the same time because there are only 5 tracks. What is the minimum number of races required to find the 3 fastest horses without using a stopwatch?

Solution :
Let the horses be numbered as H1, H2,..., H24, H25.
Race 1: H1, H2, H3, H4, H5 (let's say that H1 comes first in the race then H2 then H3 then H4 and then H5 and similarly happens for the next races...)
Race 2: H6, H7, H8, H9, H10                     Race 3: H11, H12, H13, H14, H15
Race 4: H16, H17, H18, H19, H20             Race 5: H21, H22, H23, H24, H25
Race 6: H1, H6, H11, H16, H21   (the winners of the fisrst five races)
But H16 came 4th so we can eliminate horses (H17, H18, H19, H20) as top three contenders. Similarly we can eliminate horses (H22, H23, H24, H25) and horses (H12, H13, H14, H15) and horses (H8, H9, H10) but not H7. We know already that H1 is the fastest horse of all.
Thus Race 7 is : H2, H3, H6, H7, H11 to determine the overall 2nd and 3rd fastest horses. Let's say H2 and H3 comes at first and second position respectively. So, finally we have top 3 fastest horses in just 7 races H1, H2, H3   Answer : 7 races.
